The independent country, Singapore or officially named, the Republic of Singapore is an Island located at the southern part of the Malay Peninsula. It is opposite a Malaysia’s city, typically known as Johor Bahru, and near the southern part of Johor. That city is connected with Singapore’s Woodlands town by a stone-causeway across the narrow Johor Strait. In addition, she is also near to the north of Indonesia’s Batam Island. Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia with an estimated population of 4 million citizens formed up by multi-races. The national day of Singapore lies in the 09th of Aug every year since she gained independency on 1965 from British rules and federation merging with Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak after had being occupied by Japanese during World War II as a British Colony.
After her independent, Singapore had been going through a hard period of survival due to the small population and the lack of natural resources. Leading by the Prime Minister at that time, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew from the political People’s Action Party, she slowly but yet miracle-like arisen from a defeated swampy island to one of the world’s known prosperous nations!
English is used as the first official and administrative language in the Republic of Singapore, while other languages like Malay, Tamil and especially Chinese (Mandarin) serves as the second official language. Even though English has greatly adopted since after the independency, elderly folks who have taken part to develop the Singapore nation initially, might not being able to speak it fluently due to the lack of good educational at their early time.
